Summer Reading Group June 16, 2009

It’s hard to believe…but, summer is here. And with summer comes time spent with great books. So, re-church in announcing a Summer Reading Group. We will be blogging through What Would Jesus Deconstruct?, by John D. Caputo. This is an enjoyable and challenge jaunt into postmodernism, Derridian deconstruction and the gospel. Caputo has a playful style and a sharp, ironic style that is sure to rub us the wrong way and spark some great conversation.
There are 6 chapters and we will blog one chapter a week for six weeks, starting July 13, so you have time to get the book and start reading. Our bloggers will be:

The DVDs from Beyond Evandalism, with Peter Rollins are edited and have been sent out for duplicating. That means we will have DVDs in the next couple of weeks.
The set includes 5 DVDs: 1 each of Peter Rollins’ three sessions and two additional DVDs that include the four responses.

People will begin arriving in about two hours. The opening session begins in 5 hours. I am so impressed with the group of nearly 80 people who will be attending. They are some of the most talented and commited Christian leaders I know.

Please join us for a re-church gathering in Hollywood, California, March 1-2.
The primary speaker will be Peter Rollins. Peter is the co-ordinator of the experimental collective Ikon. Ikon describes itself as iconic, apocalyptic, heretical, emerging and failing and engages in what it calls theodrama and ‘transformance art’.
Our theme will be “Beyond Evandalism.” Through Peter’s challenging talks responses from other speakers, including Ryan Bell and Samir Selmanovic, each particiapant will have the opportunity to both share their wisdom and contribute to a constructive proposal for ecclesial witness in the 21st century.
The gathering will begin at 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 1 and continue all day on March 2.
Cost: $75 early registration (through Feb 9); $90 regular. (More information about how to register and pay will be forthcoming).

In Conversation – a podcast experiment November 12, 2008

Last Friday morning, November 7th, four friends recorded a conversation as a pilot for possible future podcast which will feature Adventist leaders in conversation. All the details are not worked out yet about how this podcast will develop in the future or how it will be distributed, if at all. So, we offer it here for your enjoyment but especially for your feedback.
For those of you who have been a part of re-church in the past or have been recently involved in helping us think about the future of re-church, we are especially interested in your thoughts and whether this might be a helpful format for re-church to adopt as one of it’s projects (68% of you who participated in our survey this summer said you’d be interested in podcasts as a resources provided by re-church).

- Lisa Clark-Diller, Associate Professor of History at Southern Adventist University
